Auschwitz’s victims were mothers, fathers, friends, sons, daughters …, all the victims had a different role and identity. Cutting victim’s hairs Nazis erased the reality, they created a new reality where anonymous prisoners were initially obliged to hard work and than killed. Hairs whether they lie down in a bag or strongly grow on our head have a charismatic power, they show to the other who we are, they speak-up, they denounce, it is impossible to erase their witnesses. During the performance, in front of a table where there are different kinds of hairs, I sew on white tissue the sentence “ARBEIT MACHT FREI”, this sentence was at the entrance of Auschwitz concentration camp. The sewing is made by using my hairs that I tear and use one by one any time I need. My hair in this case is given spontaneously, “sacrificed” as it was a witness of something that cannot be forgotten, something that someone, also today wants to deny. At the end of the performance I will leave a tissue sewed with my hairs, a meticulous handcraft of memories, a sign that cannot be deleted, a witness of something that could never be forgotten by the entire mankind.
