I am a composer or musician or sound artist – something like that. Open forms, improvisation, indeterminacy and real-time processing often pop up in my work. Next to my activities as a vocalist and guitarist I design audio software within programming environments as Supercollider and Pure Data.
Blurring the lines between the electronic & the acoustic, the composed & the improvised, craft & amateurism, the traditional song & the sonic experiment is an important motive in my work. Through the use of open forms I try to establish a more participative attitude at the side of the spectator – true listening. In a project like mix[ing]redients the creating role of the audience is actually being explored.
Balancing between being ‘serious’ and toning myself down through the use of irony is the struggle that is present in all my work and is the fuel behind it. My work often reflects on the ‘heroism’ of the complex, inner life in relation to the superficiality of the external life. In that sense I am very much inspired by James Joyce. Even the darkest perspectives should be ridiculized and relativized through the use of humour, but in such a way that they become stronger, not weaker.
Going on to the street to perform down there is something I do more and more to get away from the conventional music performance venues and to utilize the musicality and theatricality of the environment. In the bicycle project Volle Band I use sound bicycles to perform pieces at bridges, viaducts and squares, while the audience has to cycle along. Surrounding noises mingle with the ‘composed’ noises. Another line that blurs.
